Of course these are all web editions and I draw the cartoons digitally. But this morning while walking the dog, I passed through about half a dozen bits of web. It seems the spiders are really busy. It reminded me of the Far Side cartoon of spiders that have built a web at the foot of a playground slide, talking about their big plans.
Monday
This is leftover from my Hamilton trip. Even though I still think it is reasonable to take precautions to avoid getting COVID since it seems that the likelihood of getting a debilitating form of long COVID increases with the number of times you get the basic form, even if you’re up on vaccines, I still find it unnerving to be cautious while trying to do things in the world when hardly anybody else is. Anyhow, I tested myself for 4 days after returning and remained negative.
Tuesday
You may recognize the allusion to the Princess Bride regarding rodents. I am hoping this rodent has not found its way into our house. Once upon a time, I took a course in Phylogenetic Systematics on how to figure out how biological entities are related to each other. It is so along ago now, I suppose they might have changed the name. I wonder what it is about squirrels that upsets my dog so much.
Wednesday
I have probably been mentioning our Prius plug-in a little too often, but I am still getting used to adjusting my self image as someone who drives something that looks cool while virtue signalling about reducing our carbon footprint. Of course, the consequences of building a new car with a large battery probably wipes out the environmental benefits.
Thursday
I don’t know much about making music although I took years of piano lessons, but I enjoyed this musical reality show. Building the Band features singers who are trying to build a band to win the competition. The initial part is interesting in that they sing individually and without been seen, they connect with others who like their sound. The singers all seemed quite good, but they varied in their abilities to find band mates and work together. Only so many bands can form and then they compete against each other. What I found so beautiful was the way that people of different colours were able to find each other and get along. My favourite group was called SZN4, which I know seems like part of a license plate.
Friday
Because my ipad is “old” it is hard to find cases that will fit it. It seemed like the ones they still have are the particularly ugly ones, though I don’t know whether one that is half duct tape is better looking than one that is fluorescent orange, but somehow I could not convince myself to get it.
Saturday
At the little local gallery Visual Space, I came across an exhibit called Memory Not Found by artist Emily Nguyen. I had the chance to chat with her about her pains taking process and mathematical inspirations. My doodles do not do her work justice, but it was just capture some of the elements of it.
Sunday
Although I remember the incident clearly, I’m not exactly sure whether it was actually in Nagasaki or whether they were actually Mormons. It was interesting to play with expectations people have based on how you look. Many Japanese cities have these covered shopping streets. They seem to be modifications of the existing areas, so they are in the downtowns, instead of creating a brand new mall that undermines the activity in the city.
So that was my week. I hope you had a good one, with a better one to come. Here are some buttons you could tap, if you are so inclined.
