Spoon Edition
10 May 2026
My mom used to collect souvenir spoons from wherever we would visit. She had racks of them in our kitchen.
Monday
I was a kid when Star Wars first came out. I remember doodling variations on Darth Vader in notebooks. The villains all seem to look more interesting. Real life villains are just disgusting.
Tuesday
I don’t think raccoons, crows, or coyotes like horse chestnuts. I thought they were supposed to be toxic. I wonder if it was the same alien who left them under the hood of our car a while back. I haven’t figured out the message yet.
Wednesday
This idea of figuring out what is going on in someone else’s head is an ongoing challenge. Even when you use the same words, they won’t be pointing to the same experiences. The IT person eventually sent me a different link and it seems to have worked out.
Thursday
Funny AF with Kevin Hart is on Netflix. I am not really a fan of his exactly, but it was interesting to see what people can do in five minutes. Kevin Hart seems to be well-intentioned, but of course he has his particular sense of humour, which is probably partially shared by the other judges he picked and probably to some extent the fans who voted at the end. It kind of reminded me of a slam dunk competition, in which you have to figure out when to use what material when. If you’re not strong enough early, you get eliminated. But if you use your best stuff up front, then you might peter out.
Friday
Visitors from the Arkana Galaxy is another weird movie made by people with unusual accents in their names. Even if I don’t necessarily like a thing, I like to see things that are unexpected to shake up my imagination a little.
Saturday
Make (Sneaky) Art is a thin book by Nishant Jain, who also happens to live in Vancouver. I draw some of my comics using references and others by making things up. This book encouraged me to just draw what I happened to see while waiting, as a replacement for playing a game or scrolling on my phone. I guess I should have used better lighting in these photos of my drawing.
Sunday
Another episode in my ongoing graphic memoir in progress, Not Made in Japan, about my experiences as a twenty something studying marine biology in southern Japan during the late 1980s. This is about a trip to the even more southern islands of Okinawa. I introduced Nishihama-san previously as a Japanese grad student with albinism. I forget how many hours the trip was, but we had to sleep onboard as well. That is for next time.
That was my week. I hope you had a good one, with a better one to come.

My Dad's birthday is May 4th but I could never get him to laugh at the "May the 4th be with you" joke.
Did you know that May 4th is historical date in China because of how the Treaty of Versailles redistributed the (former) German concessions in China? On the bright side, Germany holding concessions in China lead to very good German Qingdao beer.
I remember being quite impressed by your mother’s spoon collection. I regret now not taking a closer look at it. RIP Terry.
