The fifth day of the fifth month is Children’s Day in Japan. It used to be Boy’s day to go along with Girl’s day on the third day of the third month. Somewhere along the line, it got changed to Children’s Day, although they still seem to have Girl’s Day. This kind of half-assed cultural commentary could get me in trouble, so I’ll stop here and just wish you a Cinco de Mayo, if that applies.
Monday
COVID is known to leave lasting damage on various systems in the body, such as the immune system. I don’t know if that has happened to me, but when I did not feel well, it seemed prudent to assume that it was COVID to avoid affecting the other members of my household and beyond. I remained negative and did not feel that bad and now I seem to be over whatever I had. Perhaps it was just a cold.
Tuesday
I was listening to the No Stupid Questions podcast hosted by Angela Duckworth and Mike Maughn, in which they answer questions from their audience, usually related to psychology in some way. They were discussing the Big Five components of personality (Openness, Conscientiousness, Extroversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism) and had a quiz to evaluate yourself. This is how I evaluated my results. I have been thinking about using these to help describe the characters I’m working on in a story.
Wednesday
Without going into detail, these are some projects I have on the go: writing a middle-grade novel about Japanese Canadian internment; researching the history of Japanese Canadians in Maple Ridge; drawing some instructional illustrations for the Powell Street Festival; helping to develop some interactive exhibits about dinosaurs. What are you up to?
Thursday
I didn’t think I was that sick and thought I was getting better. But then one night I was coughing a lot. I seemed okay after that. But I decided to bow out of a rare small social gathering on the weekend.
Friday
I did okay in school, but I was always being distracted from studying for final exams by watching hockey, especially because this was way back before the internet. I don’t really follow the NHL any more, but lately I’ve been watching 10 minute playoff highlight reels on YouTube. I was relieved that the Canucks made it through to the next round, mostly because it may delay any mayhem. My condolences to any Leaf fans out there.
Saturday
I still think it is funny that someone decided that May the Fourth was close to “May the Force be with you” for celebrating Star Wars. I suppose I might have called this comic the The Barber of Dagobah. But I can’t keep up with all the new stories filling out the Star Wars universe. How about you?
Sunday
For Children’s Day, flying carp kites is a typical custom. I thought it would be funny to have human kites for fish kids, or fry.
So that was my week. I hope you had a good one with a better one to come. May the Force be with you.
Your May 4th comic is incredible!! 😃
