Hope you are enjoying another one of those guilt marketing scheme days. I’m lucky I’ve gotten along with my Dad and I mostly get along with my kid. If things were not so good for you, or if your father has passed on, my condolences.
Monday
I was listening to the No Stupid Questions Podcast in which they were discussing the value and technique of having successful get togethers. It made me think about the writing group I am in. I initially joined after taking a night school course in short story writing. The membership has evolved, but the spirit of it continues, even as we meet online. Do you have any tips for having good gatherings?
Tuesday
I was listening to the Philosophize This! podcast on the weird philosopher Slavoj Zizek, which made me think about the idea that everyone sees the world through their underlying ideology. This got me realizing about how this can make it difficult to see what people are really like. Unless they answer the Colbert Questionert.
Wednesday
The problem with watching TV series is having to waiting between seasons unless you wait until they are all finished. I keep telling myself to do that as I wait for the third season of this Chinese drams. This episode from Season 2 of the Joy of Life was only a small fragment of all the intrigue, but I was particularly interested in the elaborate process of having national exams for which men of all ages applied to get positions in government. The examination lasted three days and the contestants had to bring their own food. I never liked studying, but I did like writing tests to see what I knew. The hero’s enemies were trying to make him look bad by sabotaging activities for which he was responsible. But he was always one step ahead.
Thursday
I know crows are supposed to be smart, but I find them annoying. Maybe I am a crow and don’t realize it. At the beginning of the pandemic, I used to stand outside and bang a pot to acknowledge front line workers and say hello to my neighbours. I hardly see them anymore, though people are still getting sick. How well do you know your neighbours?
Friday
As the days last longer, if the weather is pleasant, I go for a stroll after dinner. Often I head to a bog that local volunteers work to maintain. According to my Merlin app, some different kinds of birds sing around there.
Saturday
Being able to just tweak a document without starting over used to be a benefit of using a word processor. But I think that maybe it is not always for the best. By actually rewriting, then writing the same thing or something different has about the same cost in terms of effort. I don’t know whether I can say it improves the product at all.
Sunday
Speaking of Father’s Day, male seahorses are known for rearing the young, at least until they are big enough to swim on their own and get eaten. I always find the evolutionary biology behind behaviours intriguing, though I actually don’t know what the explanation is in this case.
That was my week. I hope you had a good one, with a better one to come.
Tips - 15%.. Everyone pay their own tab. Have lots of cheese and crackers. Sparkling Rose is nice, especially in the summer.
ps. I liked your previous comments on frying pans. I too like the cast iron ones. You are correct, non stick ones are a waste. They become "stick" pans very fast.
