I’m away, so I am sharing comics from when I started posting 4-panel comics in 2020, which, by coincidence began just before the pandemic. I think I was using a different app to draw them then and I wasn’t sending them out in a newsletter.
One
I was testing out formats. I was using a different virtual nib for the lines vs the text, whereas nowadays I just do them in the same line mostly. These were scenes from around our house. We don’t have that frying pan anymore, or that plant, or that treadmill. Still have the dog though.
Two
I wasn’t titling or dating the comics then. This was about a weird short film by David Lynch on Netflix. Maybe it is redundant to say it was weird since it was by David Lynch. I remember seeing Eraserhead when I was in high school. The black and white of this one kind of reminded me of that.
Three
This was sort of a haiku, with the second line split between panels two and three. Sometimes walking in the rain evokes a poetic feeling. Walking the dog forces me to interact with all kinds of weather.
Four
I don’t think I had heard of Zendaya before watching this movie. Now she seems to be everywhere and Spider-Man Tom Holland has put a ring on it. Not that I follow celebrity gossip. The fake spectacles of Mysterio in this movie reminded me of the Trump administration from back then.
Five
These were some memorable moments at the Lower Mainland Museum Educators conference I attended just before the pandemic got serious in British Columbia in 2020. I miss hanging out with museum educators.
Six
Some museum people can be a little snobby, and this was from a conversation with one at that same conference I just mentioned. Even if the main contribution of Star Wars to popular culture was merchandising, it is part of something I grew up with.
Seven
These are scenes from stories at my weekly writing group. We meet every Monday evening to critique each other’s stories. I have been part of a writing group for about twenty-five years. Maybe I should be embarrassed to admit that since my outward publication record is so low. Oh well. Process. Since the pandemic started, we have been only meeting online. Now we can include people who are further away. I miss the snacks, though it seems I make up for that in other ways.
I enjoyed seeing your older comics!
